外语教研室主要从事大学英语、学术英语的教学和研究工作。本教研室共有教职员工18人,其中教授1人,副教授2人,讲师8人,助教6人,教辅1人。教师中获博士学位3人,硕士学位14人。教研室另有外籍教师2名。其中获博士学位1人,在读博士1人。
外语教研室历年来承担着学院大量的大学英语,研究生英语及专科英语的教学任务,是培养、提高学生英语综合能力的重要阵地,具有从专升本、本科、硕士、博士等多层次的教学体系。现教研室主要负责人陈荣歆副教授、杨苗教授在应用语言学以及英语教学等方面有深厚造诣。
近几年,在汕大医学院课程改革的大背景下,外语教研室根据大学英语教学大纲要求,结合医学院外语学科的特点,启动英语教学改革计划,先后于2012年启动“大学英语-医学英语”整合课程改革、于2014年启动“向学术英语渐进转型”的深度教学改革,形成“大学英语-医学英语-学术英语”的课程体系。经过两年的发展,于2016年确定了医学院英语课程的总体框架:通用英语课程(第一学年) - 通用学术英语课程(第二学年) - 专门学术英语课程(第三学年)。
改革后的英语课程,将批判性思维课程贯穿整个课程体系,并依托医学人文内容,建立基于团队、基于项目的学习模式,促进英语学科团队和医学学科团队的跨界合作;通过开展英语学术口头报告、壁报报告等形式,培养了学生的学术语言能力、专业信息管理能力及批判性思维能力。与此同时,第一学年的通用英语课程也取得显著成效,历年大学英语四级统考通过率均在95%以上;第二、三学年的学术英语课程,助力学生参与全国大学生各项英语学术赛赛,并屡获佳绩。
经过数年的锤炼打磨,课程建设不断发展完善。2018年课程成功申请广东省高校教学质量工程项目--在线开放课程;2019年成功在“中国大学慕课学校云空间”上线,并于2021年转型为慕课课程;2020年课程成功通过教育部审核,在学堂在线国际版上线;2020年该课程被广东省教育厅认定为线上线下混合式一流本科课程;2020年该课程参加全国混合式教学设计创新大赛获得三等奖。另外,学术英语课程专著《学术英语课程设计、研究与教学 -- 国际交流能力与批判性学术素养培养》,已于2021年由北京大学医学出版社出版。
外语教研室将持续致力于打造“语言+思维+信息管理”三位一体的英语课程,培养具备“医学人文素养+英语语言能力+国际交流能力”的未来医师。
An Overview of the Foreign Language Department
The Foreign Language Department is committed to the teaching and research of college English and academic English. Our faculty is composed of one professor, two associate professors, eight lecturers, six assistants and one technician, among whom three is a PHD degree holder, and fourteen are master’s degree holders. Additionally, our team includes two foreign teachers, one is a PHD degree holder, and the other is a PHD candidate.
The department has well developed into an important platform for cultivating students' comprehensive English skills, with a multilayer teaching system encompassing programs for undergraduates and postgraduates (masters and PhD students). The directors of the department, Prof. Chen Rongxin and Prof. Yang Miao, are well established in research areas such as applied linguistics and English teaching.
Against the backdrop of curriculum reform in our college over the years, the department has launched an English teaching reform in line with the requirements of the College English Curriculum and the characteristics of English for medical students. It embarked on an integration of college English and medical English in 2012 and steadily furthered the teaching reform towards academic English in 2014, giving full play to the curriculum system of College English - Medical English - Academic English. In 2016, the overall framework of the English course for our medical students was put in place: General English (for the first academic year) – English for General Academic Purposes (for the second academic year) – English for Specific Academic Purposes (for the third academic year).
In the reformed English course, the training of critical thinking is consistently underscored, while team-based learning and project-based learning are encouraged. Optimizing the resources of medical humanities, the cooperation between the English and medical teaching teams is boosted. The students’ academic language skills, information management skills and critical thinking skills are sharpened through an array of class activities such as academic oral presentation and poster presentation. Accordingly, the general English course in the first academic year has yielded impressive performance, with a high pass rate of over 95% in CET4 among the students in recent years. Furthermore, the academic English courses in the second and third academic years have contributed to the granting of many prizes in various national academic English contests for college students.
The English course been upgraded through years of refinement. In 2018, the course successfully applied for the Teaching Quality Project for Guangdong Universities – Open Online Courses. In 2019 the course was launched on the schoolcloud of icourse163.org, and promote as a MOOC course in 2021. In 2020, the course was launched on the international channel of xuetangx through the accreditation by the Ministry of Education. In the same year, it was recognized as a Top-notch Online-and-Offline Blended Undergraduate Course by the Department of Education of Guangdong Province. Subsequently, it won the third prize in the National Competition for Innovation in the Blended Teaching Design. Besides, the book Academic English Course Design, Research and Teaching – Development of Intercultural Communication Competence, Critical Literacy and Academic Literacy co-authored by our faculty has been be published by the Peking University Medical Press in 2021.
The Foreign Language Department will forge ahead with its three-in-one English course featuring the integration of language, thinking and information management, in an endeavor to cultivate future doctors with medical humanities and professionalism, English proficiency and international communication skills.
